Your 5-Point Proper Sitting Posture Checklist to Avoid Neck Pain

Written By Commons Chiropractic Center on January 16, 2020

proper sitting posture

If you’re like most Denville residents, you probably spend about two hours each day sitting during your commute to work and then sitting for eight hours behind a desk downtown.

Sitting for extended periods of time – especially without proper sitting posture – can have dangerous health repercussions.

Research shows that sitting for too long puts you at risk of high blood pressure, high blood sugar, poor cholesterol levels, and other dangerous conditions.

The effects aren’t much better for your musculoskeletal system either.

It’s important to stand up and get your blood flowing at least every 30 minutes if you sit behind a desk all day.

While you’re sitting, make sure to practice proper computer posture to prevent unnecessary pressure on your hips which leads to chronic neck and back pain.

  1. Keep your feet flat on the floor and your knees at a 90-degree angle.
  2. Position your computer monitor at eye-level.
  3. Keep your lower back flush against your chair – don’t perch on the edge or slouch.
  4. Support your forearms with arm rests and position your elbows at a 90-degree angle.
  5. Consider computer ergonomics like kneeling chairs, standing desks, and angled laptop stands.
